Today, B.C. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced that effective immediately, B.C. is opening eligibility for the AstraZeneca vaccine for anyone born in 1981 or earlier (40+).
That means anyone who is 40 years old and older is able to be vaccinated for their first dose of AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD COVID-19 vaccine. Please use the booking form to schedule your appointment with us from Monday to Friday.
*Subject to vaccine availability. Vaccines have been provided in limited availability, please book an earlier appointment as vaccines will be administered in a first-come-first-serve fashion.
Dr. Henry said the latest evidence shows the risk of developing serious blood clots after receiving this vaccine is about four people in one million and that the risk of COVID-19 far outweigh the risk of blood clots.
“Based on the risk of hospitalization we’ve seen particularly in younger age groups, we’re now going to expand the use of AstraZeneca to people 40 and above across the province, so it will be available in pharmacies for people age 40 and above,” Dr. Henry said.
As of Apr. 14, 2021, there were approximately 91,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines that have been confirmed to be administered through pharmacies. Dr. Henry said that means there are approximately 88,000 doses remaining in pharmacies across British Columbia. The province is also starting targeted, AstraZeneca-only clinics for people in highest priority areas, where case counts are high, and the number of people in those communities 40 and over who have not yet been vaccinated.
